    SCARLET LETTER Auditions

Thank you for your interest in the 2017 Fall production of SCARLET LETTER at Governors State University. This is the place to learn a little more about the show and also to claim your audition slot!

    ABOUT THE SHOW
Sarah Saltwick's SCARLET LETTER is a contemporary, feminist interpretation of the classic novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hester Prynne has been sentenced to wear a scarlet letter as a consequence of her affair with a man she refuses to name. Her young daughter Pearl, the product of that affair, asks questions Hester can’t easily answer. And then a familiar stranger comes to town… This adaptation offers fresh interpretations, an expanded ensemble which should reflect the community in which it is performed rather than what might be historically accurate, and new insights into the nature of freedom and the sacrifices we make for love.

    ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION
Rehearsals for this production will begin the week of September 11th.
    Tech weekend is October 28 & 29
    Performances are November 3, 4, and 5

We are seeking an inclusive, dynamic ensemble of 6 Female-identified and 4 Male-identified actors..

Hester Prynne: Her quiet hides an inner fire. Stoic.

Pearl Prynne: Half child, half spirit. Curious. The embodiment of Hester’s heart. No one quite knows what to do with her. Pearl is about 10 years old.

Ann Hibbins: A possible witch hiding in plain sight. Sister of Governor Bellingham. Actor also plays Martha Endicott, wife of Judge Endicott.

Ruth Campbell: Beatrice’s older sister. Practical. Jealous of Hester.

Beatrice Brown: Ruth’s younger sister. Pregnant. Sweet but meek. Actor also plays Mercy Wilson.

Meg Wilson: A Farmer. Wants all evil out of the town. Has a large family (children and pigs) to take care of.

Minister Arthur Dimmesdale: Romantic. An intellectual. Respected and admired by the town. His sickness defies easy diagnosis.

Doctor Roger Chillingworth: Troubled. Powerful. Has cold hands.

Governor Bellingham: Wants peace in his town. Cares about appearances. Protective of his sister. This actor also pays Judge Endicott, a harsh man.

Henry Wilson: Farmer. Cares about the town and his wife. Works hard everyday.

The Town: Created by all actors with the exception of Hester and Pearl. This is the voice of the community. Often a voice of judgment. It is louder and larger than the group visible onstage. The voice echoes.
